ALAI Eu­ro­pean Aut­hors’ Right Award – Sup­por­ted by GE­SAC

The In­ter­na­tio­nal Li­tera­ry and Ar­tis­tic As­so­cia­ti­on (ALAI) is an in­de­pen­dent lear­ned so­cie­ty de­di­ca­ted to stu­dy­ing and dis­cus­sing le­gal is­su­es ari­sing in con­nec­tion with the pro­tec­tion of the in­te­rests of crea­ti­ve in­di­vi­du­als. Co­py­right and per­for­ming ar­tists‘ rights are to­day an in­te­gral part of fun­da­men­tal hu­man rights as enshri­ned in several in­ter­na­tio­nal con­ven­ti­ons, de­cla­ra­ti­ons and char­ters.

The Eu­ro­pean Grou­ping of So­cie­ties of Aut­hors and Com­po­sers (GE­SAC) com­pri­ses aut­hors‘ so­cie­ties from across the Eu­ro­pean Uni­on, Ice­land, Nor­way, and Switz­er­land. As such, it re­p­re­sent more than 1 mil­li­on crea­tors and rights hol­ders in the are­as of mu­si­cal, au­dio­vi­su­al, vi­su­al, and li­tera­ry and dra­ma­tic works.

En­han­cing the trai­ning of a new ge­ne­ra­ti­on of IP ex­perts and stu­dents on aut­hors’ right/copyright and collec­tive ma­nage­ment is a sha­red ALAI and GE­SAC prio­ri­ty which both or­ga­ni­sa­ti­ons aim to work towards by awar­ding a ye­ar­ly ALAI Eu­ro­pean Aut­hors’ Right Pri­ze.

The ALAI Eu­ro­pean Aut­hors’ Right Award – sup­por­ted by GE­SAC will re­ward two stu­dents for their re­se­arch work on a sub­ject :

(i) re­la­ted to aut­hors’ right

(ii) with a Eu­ro­pean di­men­si­on (in­clu­ding stu­dies that in­vol­ve a com­pa­ri­son with the EU sys­tem)

(iii) that in­clu­des as­pects that could be of in­te­rest to the collec­tive ma­nage­ment of aut­hors’ rights

The com­pe­ti­ti­on is open to stu­dents of all na­tio­na­li­ties (EU or non-EU). The pri­ze will be awar­ded for the first time at a joint ALAI/GESAC ce­re­mo­ny in Brussels on 14 May 2019.

15 Nov 2018 – Dead­line for stu­dents to wri­te 1-page abs­tract on the­sis

1 Dec 2018 – Edi­to­ri­al Com­mit­tee selects max. 10 abs­tracts that are eli­gi­ble for the award

15 Feb 2019 – Dead­line for stu­dents to sub­mit their the­sis into the de­si­gna­ted for­mat

1 April 2019 – Edi­to­ri­al Com­mit­tee selects winner(s)

14 May 2019 – Award Ce­re­mo­ny in Brussels
