We provide social and cultural support
Besides its main purpose, the licensing and settlement of royalties, AKM and austro mechana fulfil important social and cultural tasks in favour of their members. Both organisations provide social grants for their beneficiaries and contribute significantly to the promotion of music culture. A part of the revenues of AKM and austro mechana is dedicated to social and cultural causes of rights-holders.
The social support of both AKM and austro mechana has been consolidated in 2019 and is handled by AQUAS Ltd. Beneficiaries of both Collecting Societies are entitled to apply for the following services:
- Provision for old age
- Social support in case of serious emergency
- Social support in case of economic hardship
- Contribution to securing the livelihood of members
- Social security allowances
The allocation of these social funds is based on fixed rules which are set in the policy of AQUAS.
Contemporary composers who are members of austro mechana are entitled to apply for cultural support. The support includes, among others, sound/visual productions, music productions and –installations, education and training abroad, workshops, composition commissions, shows, production/distribution and PR of small labels, and much more.
The distribution of funds is decided in the administrative board’s committees for support of serious music and entertainment music.
In the area of cultural support, AKM’s subsidiary GFÖM (Association to promote Austrian music) handles all funding measures in line with the support guidelines decided by the General Assembly of AKM. The objective is to raise awareness for copyrighted work in the public by supporting projects for young musicians, concert performances, interest groups for music authors as well as composing and song writing competitions.
50% of all storage media levy revenues are designated to fund social and cultural tasks. These funds go to the newly founded AQUAS Ltd on one hand, and to the cultural institutions of all Collective Management Organisations participating in the storage media levy on the other hand.
The statutes of AKM provide that funding is secured by a so-called social & cultural deduction. The use of funds is based on fixed rules which have been agreed in the General Assembly.
