We ensure fair payment for music creators
Behind every song there are composers and songwriters who wrote the songs. The result of this work is the intellectual property of the songwriters. If music is played for example on the radio or at public events or recorded on CD, then the authors are entitled to fair payment according to copyright law. AKM and austro mechana collect these royalties as trustees and distribute them among composers, songwriters and music publishers.
AKM ensures that music authors and publishers get royalties if their music is played in concerts, clubs or other live events, if it is used as background music in cafés, restaurants, shopping centers etc, if it is broadcasted on radio or TV or if its available on the internet.
Austro mechana ensures that music authors and publishers get royalties from mechanical rights, meaning a share of the sales revenues of physical sound carriers (CD, DVD, etc), from the reproduction of their works in the areas of radio/tv and online/mobile as well as their share from the storage media levy.
All revenues are passed on to our members
AKM and austro mechana are non-profit organisations. They act in their own name but on behalf of their beneficiaries (“members”) and foreign affiliated associations. AKM and austro mechana do not make any profit: after deducting operating costs (AKM) or a commission fee (austro mechana), all revenues are distributed to the beneficiaries. There are fixed rules for the distribution of royalties reflecting the degree of works used.
